Absolutely DELICIOUS Coffee!
The Sowden Softbrew uses a patented microfilter, but it is still a "low-tech" method for making coffee--dump in coffee, add hot water, and wait a few minutes. The result is absolutely DELICIOUS coffee! (For my fellow coffee geeks who may be unfamiliar with this product, the end result tastes somewhere in the middle between pourover and French Press.) I have now brewed quite a few pots, and I have used a fairly fine grind (not as fine as espresso, but close) all the way up to an extremely coarse grind, all with good results and no clogging. There is some sediment, but not much, and the bulk of it is left in the bottom of the pot. The way the pot is shaped helps in this regard. Occasionally there is some sediment in my cup, but like French Press, Turkish, etc, I just don't drink the last sip.The pot pours smoothly and beautifully--you don't have to worry about uncontrolled splashes of coffee going everywhere. Clean-up is quick and easy, and all parts can go in the dishwasher after rinsing. Further, with the filter removed, the pot can even go into the microwave for preheating--just run some tap water into it, pop it in the mic for a minute, and then empty it before brewing. (Although I haven't found this to be necessary, it is an option I have tried, and it does work.) The porcelain pot retains heat well, so your second cup will be nice and hot, too.Be advised that the description refers to 5 oz cups (I recognized that prior to purchase, but it seems to take some folks by surprise, so this pot will make up to 40 ounces of absolutely wonderful coffee. I roast my own coffee and own a number of different brewing devices, including a Bunn Phase Brew, a Bonavita Immersion Dripper, a pourover cone, an Aeropress, a Yama Vacuum Pot, a quality espresso machine, A Moka Pot, an Ibrik, and more. The Softbrew is one of my favorites. It is beautiful and a conversation piece, and you can also make cold-brew coffee with it, adding to its value.Highest recommendation

Takes some tweaking
A couple things they don't tell you but you need to know.- This makes a great cup of coffee but it takes more time than they suggest. Start by using more coffee than they recommend - a little more than you would use for a drip coffee maker. In my case it turned out to be twice as much as they suggest, but then I do like strong coffee. Next, they suggest letting it sit for "a few minutes'' after pouring the hot water in. That will get you some hot colored water. If you want full flavor, you need to let it sit for at least 10 minutes.- Other reviews point out that the carafe does not keep the coffee hot long. They are correct. The second cup is going to need 30 seconds in a microwave (not a big deal to me).- Reviews also suggest that cleaning is a hassle. Not so! But there are some things they don't tell you. Do not try to wipe out the grounds with a paper towel - that seems to force them into the little holes. And wash from the outside in - the force of the water separates the grounds from the filter that way.If you've read this far, you are obviously interested. I'd recommend buying it.

Simple, stylish, and makes good coffee. Needs better insulation and better filtration.
I like this brewing method. For the last few years I've been making pour-over coffee with paper filters with good results, but don't like how all the good oils get trapped by the filter. I tried a friend's French press for a couple weeks and liked how it keeps the oils in the coffee but didn't like all the sediment that gets through and found the results very inconsistent and often bitter. The Sowden is better, smaller amount of fines in the coffee (still a bit too much for my tastes) but a great full flavor (even from cheap pre-ground coffee!) without being too bitter. The filter and grounds can be easily removed after the desired steep time by simply lifting it out. I'm still experimenting, but around 5 minutes seems to give good results.I deducted one star since, as other reviews have mentioned, it isn't well insulated and cools down too fast. Even if I pre-heat the pot with boiling water, it only stays hot for about 30 minutes. You either have to drink fast, reheat the later cups, or transfer the coffee to a properly insulated carafe.Deducted another star, since I'm getting too much sediment in the coffee, regardless of grind. My best results have been decanting the 1st 2/3 of the pot directly into an insulated carafe, then pouring the last 1/3 through a pour-over filter. That keeps most of the oils, gets rid of most of the sediment, and keeps the coffee hot. Unfortunately, it turns what should be a simple process into a complicated one.Pros: makes great coffee, easy to use, easy to clean, works with pretty much any grind, just not too fine.Cons: cools down too fast, still lets in too many fine particles.
