once you figure out the adjustment technique, this pole is superb!
it took me about five minutes of fiddling around with this pole before i figured out how to tighten / loosen the adjustment nuts. i was convinced at first that i had a defective unit. once i figured it out though, i became instantly excited about using it. the two adjustment nuts allow this pole to collapse down to about 2 feet in length, and to extend to well over 4 feet. the grip is comfortable in your hand, and the wrist strap is comfortable and adjustable up to fit around a large coat sleeve, or down to a snug fit around a bare wrist. the rubber foot is somewhat small and fits snugly on the end, but can be worked off with a little effort. the basket went on easily, but i think taking it off will be a bit more of a chore. you can twist the upper fitting to engage or disengage the shock absorber, which is pretty stiff and has about 1 inch of give with a strong push.for $20, i think you'll be hard-pressed to find a better collapsible pole that feels as sturdy or durable as this one. i'm very pleased!update - 9/23/15i took this pole out on a week-long hike to isle royale at the start of the month. i removed the basket and rubber tip, and used the pole to hike all up and down the greenstone ridge (rocky, rough terrain). it held up perfectly! there was no slip in the adjustment nuts, even when using the pole to save myself from falling after catching a toe on a rock or getting a little off-balance with my 50lb pack. the wrist strap tends to loosen up a bit with extended use, but it takes about 2 seconds to re-adjust it, so no worries there. i really can't recommend this pole highly enough!

Pole broke before we even left for our trip. Got stuck in the extensive position and we couldn't loosen it again without ultimately breaking it.

Great value for first-time poles!!
I had 3 of these poles which were given to me as a gift a while back and they've been on several local day hikes as well as a few longer trips to the Red River Gorge and the Smoky Mountains. For most of these trips I was simply trying to see if poles were for me. I have decided they are for me so I purchased one more pole to give me two pair of matching sets. These adjust in height to accommodate all sizes of hiker. They have straps which can be incorporated into your technique to relive hand-strain. The have rubber boots, metal tips and removable baskets to accommodate all types of surfaces on all types of trails. These are not as light as poles on the higher-end of the spectrum and may or may not be of similar quality however for under $35 a pair (I paid $17 for the one pole) these are perfect for a couple years or longer until I wear them out or decide to graduate to the higher-end of the spectrum.

Mountainsmith Trekking Poles
My husband had an accident while trying to repair the rollers on a barn-sized door last summer & it fell on him. Fortunately "all" he broke was his hip. While recuperating he tried various canes & walking sticks, but none were very comfortable on the hands. Our sons hike with trekking poles & swear the are great for easing pressure on hips & knees. So long story made short, we got a couple of these & they work great. He's to the point now where he doesn't even need one in the house but uses at least one for walks in our nearby park. I did some research on Mountainsmith's website & even though my joints are fine I decided I'd try them too. We seem to be less tired after we walk our mile or 2 every day. We've only had them a month & put maybe 30 miles each on them. They are holding up very well, no complaints yet. The rubber feet do wear so we'll be looking for heavier replacements before too long, but overall a good purchase.

Big disapointment
Bought two poles for my gf towards a hiking trip. When we arrived and opened poles for the first time, one of the poles didnt lock. Leaving her with only one pole. Super annoying. Not the quality I'd expected of Mountainsmith. The other that did work, was alright, but pretty heavy and doesnt' look like it will hold up for a long time. Guess there is a reason why these poles are cheap...Highly recommend to spend the extra dollars and get something worth your money. Last time i'll buy Mountainsmith

For the price, I've been surprised by the quality.
Took a pair of these to Yellowstone NP for a week long camping trip. They were great! There are others on the market for a lot more cash but for the money I would buy another set of these. Ground was soft and wet for most of my hike in YSNP so I left the rubber caps on the tips but when I got back to AZ I found the carbide tips perfect for the rough and rocky trails of South Mountain. The "shock-system" built in does add just a bit of relief when pounding down the trail. I'm a big guy, "a refrigerator with feet" and these have held up well thus far.

Cannot travel with it.
Too long for a suit case, even with compressed. TSA prohibits "ski poles" as carry on. Thus, can't travel with it.

Really happy with them.
I picked a pair of these up when they went on sale for $8.00 each. So far I'm really impressed with them. They feel really sturdy, and the twist lock doesn't slip at all. The anti-shock spring is good, not so loose it bottoms out, and not so stiff that it doesn't do anything. I originally only picked these poles because if the sale, but having used them, I'd buy them again at full price.

Buy your trekking poles in pair, there's no point ...
Buy your trekking poles in pair, there's no point to buy only one except to replace a broken one.Don't buy these if you are over 6'. As your arm should be at a right angle went using them, the maximum height that pole allows a person to use them is only 6'.
